March 2017 Newsletter
Well, being vegetarian, it is good to know that however many times the recommended amount of fruit and veg a day is increased it is unlikely that it will apply to us! Once again research has shown that more than the ‘five-a-day’ is needed to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. Many countries have been recommending ‘seven-a-day’ for some years now - Japan, Canada, Australia, for example. The British press have now reported on research which suggests that ‘ten-a-day’ should be the new goal. A witty article follows with some tips and if, like me, you need a break from the world of the 48% and if Theresa May makes your head hurt!
While we are on the subject of Europe, someone had the bright idea of ‘creating a map showing the percentage of population following a vegetarian diet’ - not without its difficulties as you can imagine. The data is from last year and I’ve never been sure how accurate Happy Cow is, but perhaps it reflects some trends. The results are pretty obvious for any veggie who has ever tried eating out anywhere in France!
My latest discovery is a really good website by Steve Dent www.circusgardener.com It has a list of vegetarian recipes that make one’s eyes water, great links and the explanation for the name of the circus gardener is very entertaining. Next time I’m in Worcester I will try to get to his place.
I came across the website whilst looking for a simple recipe for raspberry vinegar. I really miss Dufrais Raspberry Vinegar which seems to have been discontinued and, for me, nothing else comes close, so I wondered if it was difficult to make. If you are interested it’s here
This newsletter is way behind the next event going live on Eventbrite. Already, the tickets are flying off the shelves. We cannot emphasis enough that Sofia’s will be popular and if we are to secure as many places as possible we need to know early. Book now - see you there!
Happy March (anyone going? Oh sorry, must stop banging on about Brexit)
In March we have arranged a veggie menu in Sofia's Restaurant located in Javea. This excellent restaurant is a firm favourite with Javea residents and I suspect this event will book up early so although the booking site will close on 20th March I suspect it will be sold out before then so book early.
